For someone who has never completely restored a classic car, and maybe even for those who have, a total restoration project may seem like an extremely daunting task. A little organization, and a simple step-by-step plan can save a lot of time and worry.
Step 1: Gather as much information as you can get your hands on. Research and read everything you can find on your vehicle of choice. Learn about any specific options or special parts that you will need to consider during restoration. You will be able to find everything you need online and then some. You may even luck out and find an article by someone who has already completed the exact restoration you are preparing to do.
Now you’re ready to get into the car – but not all the way just yet. This step is important for planning and organizing your project. Look the car over from top to bottom and make a list of all parts and components that need to be replaced, repaired or cleaned up. Don’t forget about the interior as well. You can use this list to keep track of where you can find the parts as well to help streamline the buying process.
Step 3: Go shopping! Take your list and start obtaining your parts and getting you repairable parts sent off if need be. Any mechanical parts that require replacing should be replaced with new ones if you can get them. If you can’t find them locally use your resources online. For non-mechanical parts, junkyards and swap meets can be goldmines. You may be able to find mirrors, seats, trim, etc. there and save lots of time and money.
Now the step you have probably been impatiently waiting for. The dismantling. Starting with the engine, take everything apart and out of the car. Not only will this give you an opportunity to closely inspect everything, but you are also creating a safer working environment for working under the car – which is where you should be headed now. Work from the bottom up. Repair, replace, clean and reassemble.
After everything is back in it’s respective place on, in and around the car, you are ready for your first test drive. Listen carefully for any odd noises and be sure to feel for descrepencies in the alignment, hard shifts, etc. Your best case scenario is a perfectly running car, however if things don’t go as planned you may be facing anything from a simple repair to partially dismantling the car again. Be patient.
Now that your car is running perfectly and your interior is as good as new, the time has come to decide on a color, or colors, and your paint scheme. Take your time when deciding on a paint job; you want it to be right for both you and the car. Keep in mind, if you are considering your project to be a resale, it’s best to keep your paint scheme on the basic side.
Finally, and probably most importantly, you need to insure your beauty. Basic insurance is good enough for a basic car, but you no longer have a basic car. A knowledgeable and reputable insurance company, such as Leland West, that specializes in classic car insurance will be able to take care of you and your car should a situation ever arise. Contact your repair man if you do not know how to troubleshoot your air condition yourself. In the event your car air condition is not working properly, there could be more than one reason for this. If you have been in an accident, call your car insurance agent to see if you can get coverage
The most probably cause for a faulty air condition is that the refrigerant may be have a leak. Most ac car systems uses a product called R12, R134A, which is basically cold compressed air, such as nitrogen. When air is blow small about of the cooling substance is let off to give a cooling effect.
Since the AC is not a simple part, refrigerant can leak from any part of the A/C system. Different cars have the AC System placed in different area of the vehicle to blow air from all directions of the vehicle. Once the failed or defected part is located, it should be replaced with a new or reliable salvage used part with warranty.
Most A/C systems have a UV dye, which is usually bright forest green color and can be seen easily with black light. In the absent of a dye in the A/C unit, the leak may spew out a clear oily substance. Trace the line of the system, along the lines of the metal ferrules, rubber hoses, and clamps for any sign of malfunction or leak.
If after a good check you have not seen evidence of the leak, use a refrigerant leak detector to pinpoint and troubleshoot the area of defect. A freon leak detector you are very likely to troubleshoot the faulty spot.
You could also use an electronic leak detector to locate the leak. It can help you to locate leak from the evaporator that sometimes sends air through the vents. Check the evaporator drain to see if freon is not mixed with the water
There are easy ways to troubleshooting a car AC you just have to know what you are doing. Once you have found the problem head out to the junkyard for cheap parts
